4th Year Graphic Design Exhibition

Year 4 Design (Hons) in Visual Communication | Waterford Year 4 Design Students: Stacey Bond (20096584); Robyn Hanlon (20102216); Denis Kononov (20102224); Kailie Parle (20102552) & Kristian Ryan (20102536) The Year 4 Design students in Waterford – College Street Campus have worked on two projects that are exhibited in two distinctive ways and aimed at two distinctive target groups.

Project 1 | Design Core 8
Tutor: Dr Fiona Dowling
1. Design4Living | 3D objects on plinths with 2 X A1 poster displays - showing the research and the creative process. Aimed at the general public, with the objective to inform and help greater understanding and interaction with the 17 SDGs.

Project 2 | Integrated Entrepreneurial Skills & Design Core 8
Tutors: Dr Fiona Dowling & Dr Sharon O’Brien
2. Transition Year | Design4Living Schools Sustainable Toolkit. Is a toolkit aimed at TY students to explore and research sustainable solutions locally. The project briefs from the design students are prototypes of solutions that can be used as inspiration for the TY students. This project is a creative problem-solving pitch to schools to take it on as an alternative to TY work placements. As this is the first time it is being displayed in public as an intuitive it is the basis for a publication for research purposes.

Design4Living – Public Project 1 | Exhibition (Plinths -3D object + 2 X A1 posters on boards)

Aims & Objectives This project on sustainability was inspired by the ‘Inner Development Goals – Transformational Skills for Sustainable Development’ and the UN’s 17 SDGs 2030 Agenda. Each student considered the 17 goals and mapped them to the Inner Development Goals before creating a unique 3D response. Many of the student’s 3D design used traditional materials such as clay, paper and wood while others considered their solution working with a digital platform. The creative results required the design responses to include the research for the creative data viz/ infographic information. It also asked the students to display some of their creative process while in production. The final designs that began as a 3D interpretation of the SDGs & IDGs are transformed to 2D graphic design exhibition pieces.

Design4Living – Schools Project 2 | Exhibition (Digital display ‘screen’)

Aims & Objectives This is an individual multi-element practice-based project which integrates the marketing entrepreneurial skills module of Dr Sharon O’Brien with the Design Core 8 module. As in the case of the Design4Living -Public exhibition project the Design4Living – Schools have sustainability development goals (SDGs) and the Inner Development Goals (IDGs) at the core. The sustainable individual creative responses from the Design Students in Waterford are aimed to inspire TY students to think local. By providing tangible solutions to make things more sustainable in their immediate spaces the Design Prototypes seen at the festival are aimed to help students to think creatively at a post primary school level and produce their own ideas. This public display for the sustainable festival acts as a publication for the concept to be taken on in schools locally and runout as a TY initiative that would provide options and allow for a substitute to a work experience programme.

The event takes place at Ground Floor, T&L Building, Cork Road Campus, Waterford. All are welcome and free to attend.
